Umbrella Insurance

What is Umbrella Insurance?

Umbrella Liability Coverage (Excess Liability) covers you for Liability above and beyond your Homeowners Insurance (Condo, Renters, etc.) and your Auto Insurance. Your Homeowners and Auto policies provide liability insurance up to the limit shown on your policy. As an individual, if you are sued, your homeowner policy and/or Auto policy will pay up to that limit only. With an Umbrella, you are provided an additional limit of Liability to cover you above that amount. Insurance carriers usually require higher limits on your Auto liability limits and a minimum amount of Liability limit on your Homeowners insurance.

What Does Umbrella Insurance Cover?

Umbrella Insurance typically covers the following:

  • Bodily Injury
  • Property Damage
  • Other kinds of Legal Damages
  • Legal fees

What Does Umbrella Insurance Exclude?

Umbrella Insurance typically does not cover the following:

  • Malpractice lawsuits
  • Workers Compensation claims against employers
  • Damage caused by a business, or by any business-related activity
  • Damage that you intentionally cause to any person or property

Should I Get Umbrella Insurance?

While Umbrella Insurance isn’t mandatory, it is highly recommended if you own your home, own a business, or have assets (401k, rental properties, etc.). Umbrella coverage will protect you from losing these assets.
